"Forget the former things, do not dwell on the past." - Isaiah 43:18 NIV
My favorite definition of the word 'new' is this....
"Just beginning or beginning anew and regarded as better than what went before."
As I sat down to write this devotional and looked up the meaning of 'new' - I was struck by the freedom implied by the definition I just quoted. With the New Year before us, I've already seen and heard many making their resolutions - to be better - to do more - to break bad habits and form new, better ones. But the most freeing type of new I could offer to you this year is not a product of striving or trying to be better or do more. Its the ability to shed past failures and be freed from the pain of the past. Its the grace to walk out our daily lives in forgiveness, faith and hope for our future. Sound too good to be true? It gets even better.... This kind of 'new' is a free gift - available to all who will simply say 'yes' and receive it.
The Lord says in Isaiah 43:19 NIV, "See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland."
God wants to do new things in our lives all the time - and it starts with giving our hearts to Jesus Christ and letting Him begin to make us anew from the inside out. When we receive Him as our Savior, He covers us with His blood and washes us clean of all the guilt of our past. Romans 8:1-2 NIV says,
"Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit Who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death."
When Jesus saves us, the Bible says we become new creatures. 2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV says,
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here!"
