The History of Wasell Gardens

The Wasell Gardens has been carefully developed over the past 15 years -- but has largely been a secret spot, and is a true Collector's garden. Situated in the lush Dosewallips River valley right in the heart of the village of Brinnon, it features a wide range of shrubs, exotic trees, spring blooming shrubs (like rhododendrons and azaleas, magnolias and camelias), and four varieties of Japanese ornamental flowering cherry trees.

Summer finds the deciduous trees leafing out, mid-season blooming perennials joining later flowering rhodies and things like golden chain, dogwoods, styrax and crocosmias. The Fall color display is truly spectacular with the many kinds of deciduous trees, including over 100 separate varieties of Japanese maples in all their bright reds, crimsons merging with the golden hues of tulip tree, sugar maple, pin oak, catalpas and burning bush.

The Gardens features winding paths, wooded ponds, a shade garden area where hostas and gunnera thrive, and artfully arranged garden "rooms" where you can sit on a bench and just relax in the tranquil setting. Birdsong is a year round part of the ambience of the Gardens.

The property features large sweeps of manicured lawns, scallop-edged beds, several water features and wandering paths, and a number of large shade trees to provide a canopy in summer. We have many weeping or trailing varieties to add extra interest, with even a group of hardy fan palms and some topiary.
