When the Wasells first arrived at their new property in Brinnon, Washington, Walt knew that he had an opportunity to create a wonderful garden. He envisioned a mixure of textures and colors; trees, shrubs, exotic flowers--all masterfully landscaped to make a truly stunning result.
His most valuable tool was a Kubota tractor with which he rototilled the soil on a weekly basis for an entire year. The first trees planted were several stands of pin and red oak, plus three varieties of Japanese flowering cherries --Amanagawa, Mt. Fuji and Kwanzan.
Then came groupings of rhodies and azaleas, magnolias and a few deciduous shrubs separated by some of his favorite evergreen varieties. Bird's nest spruce, Korean fir, Mexican pine, cut-leaf sumac, dawn redwood and sequoia semper virens to name a few. Then he found additional forms of Japanese maples -- and the collection mushroomed.
